(contains art and photography that could be considered provocative or pornographic)
**pornography is a type of art. **pornography in and of itself is a neutral medium; it can be communicated through audio-visual format, literature, comics, graffiti, etc. pornography is art— and just like all other forms of artistic expression, it can be bad and soulless.
corporate, mainstream porn is, in my opinion, akin to the paintings they put in hotel rooms. it's fulfilling a single role or expectation and it does not resonate at all emotionally. people make porn that's art, that is genuinely moving in its quality and directing choices. people also make porn that's basal, ineffectual, and uninspired.
porn is a vital form of human expression.
because sex is so lucrative, the industry of porn is infamous for its emotional and physical exploitation of sex workers/escorts/ prostitutes, and its enabling of violently misogynistic ideas. young people looking at porn very often take it as instructional, which is not true. it is a performance, it's a role someone is playing that they get paid for.
porn is not the problem, pornography and prostitution are as old as human social structure. the problem is the manipulation of artistic sexual expression in the pursuit of disgustingly tacky lifestyles, in the pursuit of money and power.
porn is not the problem. capitalism is.
sex is good and porn is an essential aspect of human relationship. as conservative and puritanical ideas about sex and sex in media continue to proliferate, especially on the internet and in legislation, it is all the more important to validate the existence of pornography as human creative expression. sex workers are artists of their own right, and like all artists they are entitled to legal protection and union support. artists are already increasingly exploited and denied a living— condemning pornography as unacceptable media can only harm the distribution of other art mediums, especially on the internet.
the images i have included here are part of this and this are.na channel, which are personal collections that contain primarily adult or phonographic material. i think these are tame, even! anyway, my suggestion is to go on twitter and read a smutty webcomic by an artist you respect and appreciate the way it makes you feel. the way it turns you on, as well as the aesthetic skill and value you recognize in it.
thx 4 reading!
let me know if you disagree or want nsfw artist recommendations!
